Getting Started

Network Connection

This is for PCs connected to a computer network. This may be a standard network that you normally use or a network set up especially for use with Note-ED. The most common connection is an ad hoc wireless connection. Microsoft provide instructions on setting up an ad hoc wireless connection.

  1. Run Notetaker on the note-taker's PC.
  2. Enter the Session Title and the name of the note-taker.
  3. Select the network check box (top right of window). Uncheck any unused direct links.
  4. Ensure the Session Title to describe the session is unique - this will be used to allow students to select their session if there are simultaneous Notetaker sessions on the network.
  5. Run student on the student's PC.
  6. Select "network" from the drop-down selection-box (top-right of window).
  7. Click on the "Find Notetaker" button.  This will attempt to find the active Notetaker sessions, which will appear in the list box. If the desired Notetaker session appears, click on it, then click on OK.  If not, enter the hostname or address from the note-taker's PC and click on OK
  8. Type into the Notetaker.  The text should appear on the student's machine.

Trouble-shooting

If the Notetaker session doesn't appear, type in the address or the host name, which is given on the caption bar of the Notetaker.

Direct Cable Connection

  1. Connect the two PCs using a cable to connect the serial ports.
  2. Run Notetaker on the note-taker's PC.
  3. Enter the Session Title and the name of the note-taker.
  4. Run student on the student PC.
  5. Enter a name to identify the student if the chat-back facility is used.
  6. Type into the Notetaker.  The text should appear on the student's machine.

Trouble-shooting

A PC can have two communications ports, called Link 1 and Link 2.  If no text appears after you have set up a direct serial connection, try different combinations of the links on each machine. Do this systematically, trying all available combinations. Alter the setting on one program, type onto the Notetaker, etc.
